Emergency plumbing — Ohio
Ohio has four seasons
Every time of year brings its own kind of emergency. Here's what to expect — and when to call.
Most Ohio homes have one
Where the water is coming from tells you a lot about the problem — and who to call.
Usually a blocked main sewer line or city sewer surcharge after heavy rain. Stop running water and call — it may be sewage.
The sump pump has failed, lost power, or can't keep up. A stuck float or burned-out motor is common after heavy use.
A leaking valve, connection or tank. Shut off the cold-water supply to the heater and its power or gas.
A supply line or drain pipe in the ceiling or wall. Shut off the main water and call for leak repair.
A burst washer hose or backed-up laundry drain. Turn off the washer valves and stop using the machine.
Groundwater through the foundation is usually a waterproofing issue, not plumbing — unless a pipe runs through that wall.
Not sure which one it is? Describe it to the dispatcher.
(888) 216-9968Older housing, older pipes
Many Ohio neighborhoods are full of solid older homes — with plumbing that's reaching the end of its life.
(888) 216-9968Rust builds up inside, causing low pressure, brown water and pinhole leaks.
Section repair or repiping with PEX or copper.
Cracks and scale inside old drain stacks lead to slow drains, odors and leaks.
Camera inspection, then repair or replacement of failing sections.
Joints in old clay pipe let in tree roots, causing repeat clogs and backups.
Root cutting, hydro jetting, or sewer line repair and lining.
Aging lines between the street and the house can leak, break or restrict flow.
Water line repair or full service line replacement.

Many older Ohio cities have sewer systems that carry both stormwater and wastewater. During heavy rain they can fill up and push water back toward the lowest drain in the house — often the basement. A blocked house sewer line causes the same symptom. A plumber can inspect the line and discuss a backwater valve.
Shut off and drain outdoor faucets before the first freeze, insulate pipes in unheated areas, keep the heat on when you travel, and let a faucet drip on exterior walls during extreme cold. Never thaw a pipe with an open flame.
During heavy rain it may be normal. If it runs constantly in dry weather, the float may be stuck, the check valve may have failed, or a pipe may be leaking into the pit. Pumps that never rest wear out quickly.
It depends on the problem, how hard it is to reach, parts needed and the time of day. Nights, weekends and holidays often cost more. The independent plumber should give you the price before work begins.
Buckeye 24/7 Plumbers is a referral service. Work is performed by independent local plumbing providers. Please verify the provider's license and insurance before work begins.
Shut off the water. Then call — day or night.
